Gus Higgins... RIP

Gus is Gone.

That was the first sentence in an email my mother in law sent to us around 2pm. Our beloved Gus is in doggie heaven. We cried. It is a loss. Losing a pet is like losing a member of the family, but sometimes worse. The pet gives us unending love. The pet never has a bad day, does not get stressed out and most importantly does not talk back. When you come home he or she is there ready to lick your face off no matter what. Your husband may or may not even say hello or give you a kiss. But the dog is waiting for you as he hears you pull up. He is there waiting for you at the door knob's first turn. He is your faithful friend. Gus was the perfect name for such a sweet dog. John and Judy couldn't have picked a better one. His coat was velvet soft. Much softer than his buddies Sadie and Buster. He was a proud AKC. He loved to eat and we had that in common. He loved treats. He never missed a meal and would squeeze in two if he could. Gus had a buddy named Sadie. I am sad for Sadie. Humans can reason. We know where Gus went and we know he is in a better place. Sadie doesn't know and that makes me sad.

My beloved Smokey was like another brother to our family. He lived for 13 years. He died on Palms Sunday when I was 13. His last day we spent on lush green grass in the back yard of our house. I coaxed his coat and scratched him many times behind the years. My dad and uncle took him to the vet and never brought him back. I can remember crying for hours missing Smokey. He was a Shepard and a protector. He would jump the fence and chase us to the bus stop. He sat on command and would do anything my Dad asked. He was loyal and he was our friend.

I am sure when we go to Vero this weekend, Buster, our dog, will run all around the house looking for Gus. We've told Buster to give Sadie lots of doggie licks and attention.

Gus was loved and will be missed.
